Cotton is a natural fibre derived from the cotton plant, which produces a white, fluffy protective ball around its seeds. This can be picked and processed into a yarn that can be woven into the fabrics we use to make women’s dresses, men’s shirts, baby clothes, bedsheets, towels, and even medical supplies. No matter what you’re wearing, your outfit probably has at least a little cotton in it somewhere. It’s one of the world’s biggest crops and responsible for a huge proportion of all our fabrics. It’s not the only natural fibre around there – flax plants are used to make linen and real silk is produced by silk worms – but cotton is by far the most common.

Most fashion jeans are at least part cotton but these days a lot of people like a little stretch in their denim. It lets us wear skinny, trendy jeans without sacrificing comfort and helps a single garment fit a range of different body shapes. Cotton doesn’t stretch very much at all so it has to be blended with synthetic fabrics that do.

So why use cotton at all? There are two reasons. First, cotton is relatively easy to grow across a lot of the world’s surface. All you need is water and sunshine (although pesticides and synthetic fertilisers are often used). Second, it’s really nice to wear. Fashion jeans, shirts, and dresses made of pure cotton denim are more breathable than synthetic equivalents. They’re cool and comfortable next to the skin.

Some artificial fibres feel sweaty and sticky when it gets really warm because air doesn’t flow through the fabric in the same way. Womens dresses made of cotton are usually cooler than those made from polyester. For summer, 100% cotton clothing is a good investment. Even a garment made with 50% cotton and 50% artificial fibre will almost always be more pleasant to wear in the heat than one that’s purely synthetic.

However, there is another downside. Cotton and other natural fibres are slightly harder to take care of. They require a little more consideration in the washing machine and sometimes have a tendency to crumple and wrinkle more easily. This isn’t a problem with trendy jeans but it’s something to think about when you’re buying blouses and dresses.

There are pros and cons to cotton and to polyester synthetics. Of course, fabric determines only a small part of the way an item of clothing looks and feels so you shouldn’t worry too much about it. Natural and artificial materials are just one factor, but it’s something to think about if you’re not sure how comfortable a garment will be in the summer months.
